Dewey and Dewey’s
heritage in the legal profession is deeply
rooted in
Sandusky County,
Ohio, operating since the
1880’s. The firm was started by Thomas P.
Dewey, who was admitted to the bar in 1879. His
son Benjamin Harrison Dewey attended University
of Michigan Law School and returned to
Clyde
to practice law alongside his father for many
years. Thereafter, Thomas P. Dewey’s grandson,
Thomas Finley Dewey, followed in his father’s
footsteps and also attended University of
Michigan Law School, becoming the third
generation to practice at Dewey & Dewey. He
then became the Sandusky County Prosecutor in
1948. Later, Thomas returned to the firm to
practice with his two sons, John and Tom Jr.,
until his death in 1998.
Today, the
legal tradition is carried on by partners Tom
Dewey, Jr., Ohio State Law, 1970, and John P.
Dewey, Ohio State Law, 1972. The two brothers
grew up in Clyde and graduated from
Clyde
High School with the strong
belief that local knowledge is important in a
small town practice. As a result of this
belief, the Dewey brothers have become involved
in numerous activities other than practicing
law. Tom Jr. served eight years with the local
school board and was a past director of the
local bank. Currently, he is an active member
of the Clyde
Christian church as well as the Memorial
Hospital Foundation and the Toledo District Golf
Association.
John P. Dewey
has had the honor of being the youngest attorney
ever to be appointed judge for the Sandusky
County Court and has been sitting on the bench
since 1975. During his time acting as the judge
for the county court, John practices law and
concentrates his efforts toward real estate law,
domestic relations, and decedent’s estates. In
his spare time, John is active in the Clyde
Heritage League and served as a past president
of the Fremont Country Club and is an avid
golfer. Recently, John P. Dewey was elected
Common Pleas Judge of Sandusky County and will
be sworn in on January 1st, 2009. As
a result of being elected to sit as judge, John
will no longer be practicing law at Dewey and
Dewey, but will pass his caseload to his
daughter, Rachel Jane Dewey.
Like her
father and uncle, Rachel grew up in Clyde and
graduated from
Clyde
High School in 1999. She
then attended
Bowling Green
State
University
with a BA in History in 2002, and later
graduated from the Ohio Northern College of Law
in May of 2008. Rachel successfully passed the
July Ohio Bar Exam and was admitted by the
Supreme Court of Ohio to practice law in on
November 2008. Currently, she is practicing by
the side of her Uncle, Thomas F. Dewey, Jr.
Our firm highly
